When my step-father served in the US Navy he was paid $17.50/month.
When I was mid-career as an E6 my pay averaged more like $5,500/month, and I paid no income taxes.
Today a sailor in the same position could be looking at $8,000/month. Pay and benefits today can be fairly respectable in the US military, depending on what job you do and all of the other pays that you qualify for.
When you walk away from a profession, rarely do you expect that profession to continue paying you afterwards. After all you walked away from it.
In the case of the US military, we do have a selection of benefits that follow a person after they have served. We have the VA, various GI-Bill programs, plus some state offer free college tuition to vets, preferential hiring programs, many states and cities have vet centers for counseling and job placement.
It is only if the servicemember serves for 20 years or more do they qualify for a pension.
l v seen some movies about US Millitary... soldier seem is decent from movies ,,, but they are not in real life ,,,yesssss this is life ...
It's difficult to compar the militray of the USA to the militray of the PRC because their role and responsibilites diffre. In the USA it is a militray to serve the governement of the country where in PRC its to serve the people. As such, the USA military retirment is semi consistant with general governement and civilian retirment and pension sustems. In the PRC as you know, it is based on the service to the people and follows its own retirment system to reward that service to the people. You have the combination of years of service, age at retirment, type of position, and even the "valor of the person" is calculated in determining the benefits under the PRC military pension system with the goal that the best by lenght of service, oldest, most dangerious position and with the most valor, comes out at 100% of their active military pay. I also know understand from talking with former and current militray of the PRC is that the ultimate goal is that by retiring from the militray at full service and such, that you have no need to seek employment in the civilian sector because your justly compensated, but at the same token, they understand that some people have goals beyond service to the people so the age/lenght of service allows for retirment amd reduced pension payments at periods where the USA military won;t alow you to retire with some type of pay. I really would like to continue talkig to you on this subject especially since the militray of the PRC is facinating when compared to most other militray.
The USA treats it's military personnel pretty well and the last ten years they have made really good salary and extras. Retired military get a pretty good medical insurance plan when they retire.

Juann, we pay everything at the time of service, not at the conclusion of their service. However, the US pays much more than the PRC to its soldiers. That being said, we offer an amazing education benefit to soldiers how leave - their college or training is paid for and living expenses. This is worth a tremendous amount of money.
