A few days ago was the 24th anniversary of a major steam leak that killed 10 sailors in the fire room (aka boiler room). Arab yard worker installed black oxide brass nuts on a main steam valve bonnet. They looked just like steel nuts. Add steam at over 600 psi and over 800 degrees to brass. A valve bonnet weighing around 200 lbs was thrown across the fire room. 6 sailors died instantly. They were the lucky ones. 4 got out alive but died later. The engineers who were friends and coworkers of those killed were the ones sent in to recover their bodies. Many of them had nightmares for months. Guys regularly screamed in their sleep from the nightmares. At least two went crazy. One was petting an imaginary dog and tried to kill a guy who jokingly kicked the imaginary dog. When they went to get the other guy, he had taken his rack light apart and was touching the wires to each temple to give himself shock treatment to try to get rid of the dreams and images. After the accident, other ship's crew members and the Marines were terrified to set foot in either the engine room or fire room.
