They should look at aligning Active Duty retirements and benefits with those given to the Reserves and National Guard.

For example, Reservists/Guardsmen can't begin collecting retirement until age 60, unlike the immediate payout the AD get.

Furthermore, Reservists/Guardsmen are charged monthly premiums for their TRICARE medical/dental plan for themselves and their families, AD gets medical free and only pay dental for their families.

You're not charged when you're actually drilling or recalled to active duty. Why should they get paid a full time active duty benefit when they are only drilling a weekend a month? Why would anyone go on active duty if you could get all the same benefits only serving a weekend a month?

So you drill a weekend a month and two weeks during the summer and your retirement plan should be equal to someone who served every single day for 20 years?

I agree.

I'm a reservist and for the most part it's not really that hard and definitely doesn't warrant anymore benefits. The current benefits are great when you consider the commitment.

You work one weekend a month for 16 hours. I'd say the benefits are pretty fair.

Reservists/Guardsmen are holding down full time jobs, managing careers during that time. An active duty soldier is turned out at the point in life when his personal financial obligations are at their peak and the statistical probability is that he will not be able to find civilian employment that matches his total military compensation at that point...and won't for several years.

Nobody is going to deliberately plan to put himself into that position without a parachute.

That recommendation is absurd.
