Talking about being risk averse!
An fellow that I use to live near by told me about a story when he was in Fallujah with the Marines
back in 2004, they were given orders to fire the people approaching the tower because they were
not stopping while he was guarding a specific place I won't mention or want to remember the name
. According to the vanished fellow, he and others in his team killed innocent civilians instead of insurgents back in 2004 because of wrong decisions from his captain.
That the Marine captain was well connected, forced him to report different facts and realities to the chief of command and that he got away with it. I don't know if this isn't a fact, if this was a horrifying troll or what not, but he told me back in 2009 that he could not sleep because he was an excellent Catolic community servant and he may very well go to hell, that many times the situations pops in multiple nightmares while sleeping.
This story sticks and the one mentioned in this thread sticks with me forever. An officer who kills an innocent civilian in the country where there's war, with this specific story counted as a fact - and, protecting his teammates, shouldn't EVER take this lengthy punishment. Unjustified risk averse punishment, unacceptable verdict.
Very similar to the "Loan Survivor" movie and what's explained in the great Marcus Luttrell ebook. War in itself is the current enemy, rules of engagement exist for a reason, but the punishments for this lieutenant are wickedly out of hand. Nobody has to be in the military to agree with my opinion.
Sad outcome
