When I see so many veterans living homeless on the streets, I wonder what the military really has to offer.
How many of those "veterans living homeless on the streets" are verified veterans. I have to admit, I have only encountered two verifiable veterans... I still bought them hamburgers on our walk to the store...
It depends on a lot of factors...
I am a veteran. I have never been homeless. No one in our family has ever been homeless.

Given that true Veterans can get a VA ID card now for a multitude of reasons, the frauds have diminished. Most fakes can be outed by a few simple questions.

In addition to what other posters said...did you serve? because if you did, you would know plenty of people come in with their own set of problems and expect/thought joining would solve them. They end up either squeaking by and not staying in, or screw up and get booted, and find themselves out on the street because of their own issues, nothing to do with the military.
Hell, the GI Bill will put someone through college with living expenses for four years.

The percentage of homeless who are veterans is not so great (about 1%) as to suggest that the military is any more of a direct cause of homelessness than anything else people of that age group are going through.
I'd like to see more study done on why any veterans are homeless, given that they have valuable benefits that perhaps nobody else who is homeless has. I suspect mental illness (including severe PTSD) is a greater contributor to veteran homelessness than in other cases.
"anecdotal"? No, factual... My statement was factual...
Your reply was factual, but not showing the entire story:
Quote:
As of January 2018, Texas had an estimated 25,310 experiencing homelessness on any given day, as reported by Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Of that Total, 1,917 were family households, 1,935 were Veterans, 1,379 were unaccompanied young adults (aged 18-24), and 3,404 were individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.
Public school data reported to the U.S. Department of Education during the 2016-2017 school year shows that an estimated 115,676 public school students experienced homelessness over the course of the year. Of that total, 4,591 students were unsheltered, 11,474 were in shelters, 8,263 were inhotels/motels, and 91,348 were doubled up.

Pretty sad statistics all around.... Trying to push the blame on veterans? How about society?

I don't think the military caused them to become homeless. The issue is, why aren't their VA benefits helping them get off the streets and get healthcare? I thought the military had great benefits.
