In 1951 while in Japan (Army) had the honor of meeting/speaking with a recipient of the MOH earned while in the Navy during WW11 Pacific theatre.....a TRUE HERO.
Even having retired from the military, I've never met a Medal of Honor recipient. They're the only non-officers that we were to salute. I'd love to have the privilege of meeting one. It's on my bucket list.
I was the Batt XO's jeep driver and was outside HQ's when a staff car came (cover over the stars plates) so I knew it had to be somebody important. A SGT stepped out and walked to the front door and I recognized his ribbon...snapped to attention and gave a sharp salute of which he also returned.
Doing his business inside came out to find the staff car had left w/o him. He needed a ride to another nearby Army camp so I took him and we talked while I drove.....very nice person.
On return found out that the XO was PO'ed that his jeep was gone but relaxed when told who my passenger was.
Highlite of my Army career.
