When I am made King..........EVERYONE will serve two years. I don't care who your daddy is. If you don't want to carry a weapon then you can change diapers at the old folks home BUT you will serve. You'll stand formation every morning, learn how to get you spoiled whinny butts out of bed and you'll learn to make that bed.
Hmmm.......do I sound like a grandparent with spoiled rotten grandkids who need a little military bearing?
I don't expect to be appointed King anytime soon.

A 2 year period of mandatory service is not a bad idea as long it allows for some choices in the matter. Let it be served at the discretion of the servee, anywhere between the ages of 20 to 30, and let it be military or non military service as the servee chooses. Wages would mirror the current military pay scale. Upon completion of service, big brother would make a lump sum payment of $20,000, payable to the college or technical school of the servees choosing.

LOL have mercy on those still serving. I have met a fair share of kids that could use a dose of discipline. Most wouldn't last 2 weeks of boot camp. The entitlement generation is about to take over and we are in trouble.

I think they may yet surprise us all. A lot of the kids I meet are generally pretty savvy and tough -- they just need a challenge.

One can only hope that you are correct.

Agreed because a lot of kids today weren't raised with the same discipline I was used to seeing growing up. I mean I'm talking kids in the supermarket w/ their parents literally making demands: "mom you had better get me this!"

My thinking on this is pretty much the same as yours. We have created many challenges for them to prove us right.

Default I agree ... BUT

I agree with the mandatory service those of you propose, especially Hapaleeretired's (let 'em change diapers or care for the elderly) but here's a problem. I've discussed this with one of my sons, a professional soldier (Airborne officer) and he wants nothing to do with any kind of conscripts in a combat role. Says the men he's around feel the same way. Hell, they don't even like any of the other services except the Marine Corps guys who are, "squared away". Now, I was a conscript and got "squared away" very quickly and did my best to, "Protect and defend..." Do you think we have enough manpower today who would be modivated enough to support this country in a combat role? I've been called a, "warmonger" by some because I believe what T. Roosevelt said about carying a big stick and the Boy Scouts Motto, "Be Prepared". Any thoughts?

Thanks to all the men and women who have responded to the thread, and filled in the poll.

The thread's intent was to acknowledge and in some small way honour those City-Data members who have served in one capacity or another.

If a discussion is up for conscript vs. enlist, let's start a new thread. Okay!
