Hey guys, just had a quick question, I'm a current E4 / Maritime Enforcement Specialist with the USCGR and I'm looking to separate early and switch over to a dod branch. I just wanted to ask if anyone knows if I would have to attend basic training or not. I currently have 4.5 years reserve time and 9 years professional work experience (law enforcement). I've been trying to get in contact with recruiters via phone but it's been a little difficult (mainly due to myself). Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Most services are not taking prior service applicants right now so I'd make sure you get this all figured out before you jump ship from the Coast Guard.

Edited to add...I just noticed you were wanting into the reserves. That will be MUCH easier to accomplish with prior service.

.....except for the Marines..you can transfer into the Reserves or Guard w/out having to redo basic. A friend of mine did just that from the USCGR. Switching branches tends to set you back in the promotion game somewhat. And...with the cutbacks currently underway, be sure there's a spot for you before you start telling those in your current unit, that you're "outta there". Transitioning to an active duty branch is harder than for the Guard/Reserves at this time...again..due to the manpower cutbacks.
