After a 10-year break in service, Staff Sgt. Monte L. Gould will have to report to basic combat training this June at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

The 59-year-old former Marine and civil affairs soldier was less than three years short of retirement when he left the Army in 2009 to move home and spend more time with his family. But after work calmed down in his civilian life, Gould began a year-long process to reenlist with an Army Reserve unit so that he can be eligible for retirement and maybe give something back to younger troops.

Wow. How does he do it? In particular, the physical fitness requirements?

Imagine it would be quite a challenge for someone that age to complete basic training. But anyway good luck.

just did a quick google search, it looks like

"For the Army and Air National National Guard, the maximum age for prior service enlistment is 59, as long as the member has enough years of prior service to be able to complete 20 years of creditable service for retirement by age 60."

So good luck to him. Plus, 60 is the new 40 perhaps, for people who take care of themselves and are in great physical shape, maybe they can handle it.

He was "less than three years short of retirement"... I hope he makes it!

What rank he will go back in as? Doesn’t seen worth it to retire as an E4 three years from now. But who am I to say...

A SSG as a basic trainee? How will that work? Someone else posted that it was a waste of money to make this guy go to basic. I agree.
