The recent news story brought back memories of passing through the Suez Canal for Desert Storm. Was on the Iwo Jima LPH-2 and was surprised by how narrow this major artificial shipping lane path really was. Sure a large ship could pass but no other ships could pass in the opposite direction while a large ship was moving through. We could easily see and hear the people on the banks as they talked or whistled. Now that major passage is blocked by a freighter turned sideways and some ships are making the 14 day long trip around the southern coast of Africa because projections of opening the canal is at least a week. I’m wondering if this could cause shipping accidents since not many of these ships’ captains have sailed around the Cape of Good Hope. Also wonder if any US Navy ships are stuck in that large group of ships waiting to pass through the canal?

Oh, you mean it's like the time (before, then, after) of the Yom Kippur war when the canal was blockaded?

This isn’t the result of a war though. Was only 4 when that war happened so I don’t remember much of that time. How long was the Suez Canal closed during that time?

1967-74. Whether it was because of a war or just no diplomacy between both sides is debatable. I was a teen then, went diving around Jedda and because the canal was closed, pollution was down and the waters were pretty clear.

I did it both ways on the America, was a fun transit, steel beach picnic both times. I was surprised how narrow it was also! Our CO went into the gulf for 3 days and turned around, got us all 2 months of tax free and hazardous duty pay lol

'The ditch' is a term that I have only heard used to refer to Panama.

What’s the odds that the captain of that sideways container ship will be fired or is already gone?

I would think that there are local that guide the ships on their passage through the canal.
