Well VCS's original setup was as a canteen within VA Medical facilities to serve veterans, their families and guest of veterans. It was expanded to all active/retire military and VA employees or contractors. However I believe anyone can still use any of the 'Patriot' services of VCS, just not the online store.

My reply was directed at the OP's "Veterans shopping website," not the original mission of the service that they provide. I'm a veteran and I can't shop there unless I'm enrolled in the VA healthcare system. Therefore, it's not a "Veterans shopping website."

No big loss. Like most veteran "benefits," they're probably not worth a eff anyway.

blah...blah...blah that you quoted from a different website
From the OP's website...

"Established in 1946, Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) was created to provide articles of merchandise and services at reasonable prices to Veterans enrolled in the VA healthcare system, caregivers, and visitors."

That means NOT for all veterans.

Folks it is marketing.

Someone is trying to define a specific type of customer and merchandise junk to that market.

Bumpersticks and pennant flags for each branch, a huge selection of colognes and jewelry, fan paraphernalia for every pro athletic team, and a small selection of extremely overpriced clothes. All the stuff that is sold via the Exchanges on every military base.

As a retiree, I still have access to the Exchange website, I can still purchase any of those same things but now it is all online.

Govx is a verification website used to verify if a person is a member of as specific group. It's similar to ID.me. Neither one sets the eligibility to use that vendor's services, they only verify if a person is part of a designated group.

Yes, I agree with you that the website isn't' available to just a veterans unless they meet the added requirements.

Yeah, the confusion is that when the VCS was originally setup, they were all within a VAMC. Unlike a hospital with a cafeteria , gift shop or snack bar, VAMC's only had the VCS for all those services. They encouraged visitors to shop there for gifts especially for inpatient veterans. I never really understood the need for VA Healthcare status as pretty much anyone can shop in the physical store or use any of the other canteen services at a VA facility. I have never been asked for any ID at the VCS coffee shop in the lobby of my local VAMC. Come to think of it, don't think I've every been asked for any ID at any VAC retail stores or any of the VCS popup Patriot shop anywhere. I did have to have my eligibility verified for their online store.
