MCRD San Diego, 25 Jan 1980 (my PEBD) to 25 Apr 1980: 1st RTBN, B Company, Plt 1016.

We used to sing that cadence while marching ("DE-LAYED CADENCE, COUNT!") - and it still rings in my head today: "1st Battalion, Bravo Company, Ten-Sixteen".

From memory, but I'm pretty sure this is correct:

Series Commander (Series 1013): 1st Lt Toolan
Senior D.I.: GySgt Leland K. Deuel
D.I.: GySgt Máximo D. Cordoba
D.I.: GySgt Callahan
D.I.: SSgt Campbell

Two things about Gunnery Sergeant Max Cordoba...

Gunny Max Cordoba figured in during the OJ Simpson trial.
Google "Mark Fuhrman Max Cordoba": https://www.google.com/search?q=oj+s...an+Max+Cordoba

That was 1995. Earlier, around 1981, it was a year or two after boot camp and I was going to UCSB at the time. I was driving in Santa Barbara near the beaches and I drove passed Gunny Cordoba walking on the sidewalk, wearing camouflage utility trousers and a long sleeve white thermal undershirt (the old cotton kind). He was carrying a boom box on his shoulder, held up to his right ear. I doubled back but by the time I turned around he was gone.

I can still picture the scene today. It was near Shoreline Park and Leadbetter Beach, down near SBCC. I think but am not certain that the exact location was near Washington Elementary School, where Meigs Road becomes Shoreline Drive. I live in Northern California now, and it's been a long time since I was down there.

I suspect that he saw me drive by, with a USMC sticker on my car, and realizing he was wearing his camo trousers in an unauthorized manner, he ran over to nearby bushes and hid from me.

It's been over thirty years now but I swear it was him!

Sign me,
Gunny T

Default First Co-Ed Cycle?

Just so happens I was in the very first cycle of Co-Ed trainees and, while expecting the rough treatment and tough physical testing my father, uncles and older brother had told stories about, Boot Camp was a breeze. Went on to retire.

I got off the bus at Ft. Dix in June 1980. I was in D-4-3 and we had 3 male platoons and 1 female platoon in our barracks. We graduated Aug 1980 so your cycle wasn't the first co-ed, mine probably wasn't either!
