I have indeed. I also heard the one about the Gurkhas at the British Para Regiment with their English officer. A Hercules was flying over getting ready for a jump run (so it must have been Salisbury then ) and he told his men "that's what you'll be jumping from."
There was much consternation amongst his entourage and so he asked what was wrong. They replied "any chance they can fly lower?"
"Lower!!!" replied the officer "but your chutes won't have time to open."
"Oh, we'll have parachutes then? Why didn't you say so?"
Ninor---Many years ago I read a book called "Bugles and a Tiger" by John Masters. The book is about Masters' service as an officer in a Ghurka regiment on the old Northwest Frontier of India in the 1930s. Very interesting, I'd think it would be required reading for American officers now serving in the same area; I doubt the wiley Pathans have changed much other than now being called "Pushtuns".
Did any of you guys ever hear of an old book titled "war in Waziristan"? it's british book about the afgan frontier in the 1990's. it was mentioned in a bbc article but i can't seem to find it at the moment. can't find the book either

Min contract is five years. Money isn't bad...you have to remember in the military (at least in the Legion) the money is yours to do what you want i.e. it might not sound like much but you don't have to pay rent, mortgage, car payment, gas, electricity, water, food etc so it's entirely disposable income.
Once you get overseas and have some rank the money is very good and the pension is 75% of whatever you were earning the year you quit...paid wherever you live for the rest of your life.

PS: Of course don't join the military if your goal is to be rich
Ninor,
Killing time in Algiers in office waiting for clients to return to base from meetings and stumbled on this...
1984 I joined the legion, after Castel I was sent to Djibouti, 2 years with SML in CCAS, then in 1987 I went to REP, 4eme CIE, where my first compagnie tournant was .... you guess it Djibouti! Arta was different from Djibouti town though!
I remained in REP till 1990, having signed on again for 12 months in 1989 for a compagnie tournant in French Guyane, the place I asked for in affectation in 1984.... and they sent me to Djibouti ha! ha! On hindsight a good financial move though!
On other question I could not even count to three in French when I joined but learned quickly! To get rank you need to do courses which are all in French! If you did not want to remain a second class soldier, lots of guard duty and 'fatigues' etc. French was a priority, get the courses under the belt and eventually the Corporals course behind you then you gave out the 'fatigues' instead of receiving them!
Aye yes, La Vie Est Belle
