The American Legion Strongly Opposed to President's Plan to Charge Wounded Heroes for Treatment
WASHINGTON, March 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The leader of the nation's largest veterans organization says he is "deeply disappointed and concerned" after a meeting with President Obama today to discuss a proposal to force private insurance companies to pay for the treatment of military veterans who have suffered service-connected disabilities and injuries

I read the article. I know it doesn't go into the full details of the plan, correct me if I am wrong....
I had a service related injury. I agree that the VA should have to pay for my care. I'm fine now but if I ever have any problems related to my injury I will have to go back to the VA.
The VA set me up with a primary doctor an hour North from where I lived at a regional clinic. The specialist I had to go see was an hour and a half South of me. They were good doctors and fixed me up. Unfortunately I spent a year and a half driving back and forth. It's not fun having to take pain pills(maybe a little fun) while I wait 1 month+ between appts. Anytime I had an appt. it would kill my whole day. I also would drive my grandfather a few times a year for his appointments. I remember that you could get mileage reimbursed. I never tried. Maybe it was because you had to be over 90 miles?. I don't remember.
I would of much rather pay a $20 deductible and not miss a full day of work and get my problem taken care of in a couple months where I lived.
So if this forces an insurance company to take some of the fine print out of their policies I'm all for it. As long as the VA is still an option if I prefer it.
I find it ironic--also hypocritical--that Michelle Obama was in Fort Bragg just last week slobbering over military families and the sacrifices they make.

Like yourself, I'm a DAV and I'm retired at the same time. My service related injuries are cover by VA, but the other things that they help me with are not. My insurance takes care of the bill for the most part.
Here in Ohio they still have travel reimbursment, you may need to ask them at the front desk what the sipulations are.
But for all military relaited medical problems should be cover by the VA 100%, I'm sure there is something else there that we're not reading. Prsident Obama's not that stupid, to let something of this magnetude pass.
I believe it was Obama's proposal to bill veterans for their service connected injuries as a way to further cut the size of our nation's military so that he could carry out his campaign promise of making a civilian national security force.
thankfully, a member of Obama's own party ( Democrat Murphy of Washington) announced that proposal would be--------" dead on arrival "-- if it got sent to congress.
Glad to hear there still are a few clear thinking Democrats left in DC.
I'm interested in this issue. I laugh at all the criticism Obama is getting from people that don't clearly understand the whole issue of VA care. Tricare has always used third party insurance first before paying bills for the care of soldiers/family members. I find that a good way to protect tax payers from being ripped off. Why not make the private insurance companies pay its share? Having the opportunity to be cared for by non-VA hospitals may be the way some veterans want to go, plus it may unburnded the overwhelmed VA system.
I give Obama credit for "thinking outside the box" and trying to come up with new ways to take care of business. He sat down with veterans groups last week, listened to their concerns, then backed off from this proposal.
What a concept that a President makes himself available to his critics.

AMEN, Bucfan! It's all just political posturing. Good leaders should be willing to put ALL ideas on the table. There's nohing worse than "We've always done it this way". Now I truly doubt America's veterans would be asked to pay for their injuries "out of pocket"; that just doesn't pass the common sense test. Nowadays, with our 24-hour news cycle, any comment can get blown way out of proportion in a mater of minutes. And we Americans have let the line between "News" and "opinion" blur FAR too much...

even if the president decided against later on....it still is troubling that he would even think about it in the first place. Basically, he wasn't against it because it is morally wrong....but against it because it would make him look bad.
