When we each stand before a judgment seat one day in review of our life; I doubt the reason why a person volunteered to serve in the military is even going to be in the discussion.

Patriotism is wonderful, but in my mind a poor reason to serve in the military.
In the history of mankind there have been thousands of tribes, kingdoms, republics and empires. They have all gone to war with each other. In the process millions of men have died glorious deaths in patriotic service to their aristocrats.
Very patriotic, loyal and faithful men have served their aristocrats in killing, looting, and raping others for millennia. It is a profession, nothing more.
It is certainly not an all inclusive noble calling.
Everyone of us will die. What matters more is what we did with our lives.
What did we live for?
Did we advance mankind?
Did we feed the hungry?
Did we house the homeless?
Did we nurse the wounded?
I am career military, it was a job. It was a hazardous job so it paid well and had some good benefits. Even today as a retiree I still hold certain obligations that I must respond if I am called back into service.
I do not hold my military service as a noble deed. I helped a world-wide empire to maintain it's dominance. It was a job with good benefits.
A noble deed is when you take in a homeless person and feed them, tend their wounds and find them a job.

Since you want to keep this thread going all year, thought I would add my contribution for this week. Got a call from my Coastie last night. His cutter has been at sea for 60+ days. He got back to port just in time to call home and wish his brother a happy birthday.

I would like to share that my nephew finished his training and will be going into the Green Beret's if they will have him. Lot of training ahead but that is okay.
I have a nephew who has done three tours in Iraq a niece who is there now and her husband in Afghanistan and a friend who is going in December.
My hat is off to all.
