Hi all,
I'm in the process of applying to the National Guard OCS program. I spoke with a recruiter and I'm at the point where I have to fill out the extremely long application. My problem comes in the references section for my education.

I graduated from college in 2003 and my recruiter says I need the name of my advisor or a professor who would remember me. My advisor left for another school in 2006 and I have not been able to get in touch with him. All the professors I was close with have also retired or left the school. I do not know who I can use. Is a friend OK in this situation.

For high school I am in the same situation. I was told my guidance counselor is the best person to use. I called the school and was told she is no longer there. Also, the administration had changed and I was close to a few of them and cannot locate them anymore. Can I use a friend in this situation as well?

My recruiter said that this is to verify I was enrolled when I said I was. I work for a bank and my job is background screening for new employees. I know this information is handled though the registrar’s office at 99% of school, including the ones I attended.

My recruiter hasn’t been very helpful answering the questions and has not responded to emails I sent him. I also tired registering for the NationalGuard.com forums but the first time my profile was deleted after waiting for activation for 2 weeks and the second time it’s been pending for 3 weeks.

Is anyone out there familiar with this process?

I am familiar with some of the background process. Put down a teacher or professor which you had who is still there.

The registrar can and will verify the dates. That is the only way. Educational staff do not remember dates.

If you are being accurate in this post, then you are getting a run-around... This should not happen.

Are you currently in the Guard or are you new and enlisting for OCS?

I believe part of your recruiters problem might be that he doesn't know the answers to your questions and is ignoring you. Recruiters primarily are trained and deal with recruiting enlisted people.

The paperwork for an OCS or Warrant Officer packet can be quite complicated as you are finding out.

I'm not saying that he shouldn't respond to your calls just giving you a little insight as to probably why.

Call the schools you graduated from, tell them what you are doing and ask them who you should list as a reference. Otherwise just put the name of someone who was there when you were; it is unlikely they will call the references unless there are problems in your background. Also the Army knows that people come and go and has run into this before.
