I think this is one of the best perks for military members out there. The free service from H&R Block from the militaryonesource.com website is fantastic.
We even had some unique tax situations which were all included in the basic package (adoption fees and alternative heating for our home).
It's a great deal...check it out if you have not tried it.
Also most installations have a tax assistance office that will complete federal and state tax returns for free. I have used the service on Army posts and have been happy with the resutls.
I would love to be able to use these free services since we are not anywhere near a base (Army recruiter) however, have no idea how to input information regarding savings bonds I cashed in or a form from the DOD stating:
"In a prior calendar year you were overpaid byy the DOD. The overpayment was established as a debt to the US and was reported as taxable income in that year. This certifies that during the calendar year 2009 you paid the US a total of XXXX toward settlement of your debt.
This certificate is for your use and may assist you in reducing your tax liability for calendar year 2009. Keep this certificate with your income tax records for that year. (Do not attach to your income tax return)
If the amount you repaid is less than 3k (which mine is) you may be able to itemize deductions and claim repaid amount as miscellaneous deduction."
Wtf?! What does this mean? I wouldnt even know how to claim the money back as it says I could
I've used taxcut/h&r block free via military onesource for 3 years now. I paid for the program two years prior to that before discovering this.
