I have an interview with the city of Milwaukee in public works...is there anything special I should be aware of? Is it a good place to work? Working for contractor, I hear it is easier , but was also concerned about potential problems

It depends on your job but like any job it is what you make of it. Working for the City has in the past offered more security than working in the private sector but that is starting to change.

You will be stuck with higher health care premiums especially if you are a smoker. In the future you will probably also have to pay into the pension system. Wages have been frozen the last few years and may continue to be frozen. The current contract ends at the end of this year but with collective bargaining being flushed away by the gov you may be stuck with no increases for awhile. Losses in shared revenue from the state in upcoming years may mean that you could face future layoffs. It is bleak but it is a job. Take it if you can.
