I will live in Jackson park and I don't have a car so I'm gonna use my bike a lot.

I used to bike around sketchy parts of the city and never had a problem or felt uncomfortable doing it. It was usually during the day and I kept to the main streets. For what it's worth I asked someone in law enforcement this same question. He told me that bikers and joggers are not usually targeted by thugs because of the stereotype that they are less likely to be carrying a lot of money.

That area is fine. Miller Park Way, where your shopping is going to be, is definitely safe. Anything west of there is fine too. The only areas I'd be more cautious about are the areas east of Layton (27th St.) and north of Lincoln. Even then, like Ralph says, it should be safe during the day.

Drunk drivers are your biggest concern. Have a good set of brakes & watch the intersections & you'll be OK.

Jackson Park Neighborhood is one of MKE's safest neighborhoods, you should have nothing to worry about. I will echo what Brian571 and Ralph said, that is good advice. Cars will be the largest threat.

Right, there are some neighborhoods where you need to be cautious. 5-10 years ago, some dudes in Riverwest were cracking bikers in the knee at night and taking their money/bikes - a friend of mine needed reconstructive surgery after an attack - but I think that was specific to those guys in particular, who were eventually caught.
