What happened to Northridge Mall? (Waukesha, Wauwatosa: apartment complex, appliances, buy)

I miss Marshall Field's though. Macy's is ok but just doesn't do it for me. What Mayfair (and Milwaukee) really needs is a Nordstrom or a Sak's.

I lived across from Northridge in the early 70s when it was built. It was a great area back then. I was surprised to hear that it closed, hard to believe the area had become so "bad". I have heard similar things about Capitol Court and Mayfair.
I don't understand why a new mall hasn't been built out in what used to be the "boonies"... Waukesha, Grafton, Hartford, West Bend etc. Seems like a lot of people have escaped the city for those areas.

I got my hair cut at Erik once, a loooooooong time ago. I thought it was closed but then I just heard something about it a few months ago, so I think it's still open. I don't know if it's still considered "the place" to get your haircut anymore, there's so many new & trendy salons that have opened. I live in Bayview & on KK Ave. alone there has got to be at least 10 salons on a few block stretch, I swear.

Both West Bend and Grafton HAD malls. West Bend was the home of the first Outlet Mall, but that closed almost 10 years ago after the big outlet malls opened in Pleasant Prairie, Oshkosh, and Johnson Creek. In its hayday, people came to that mall by the busload. West Bend also had a second mall, Paradise Mall, built in the late 80's/early 90's (superseded the Westfair (sp?) Mall across the street---barely a mall by today's standards), but after many tenants left (numerous theories as to why), the mall was renovated into yet another crappy strip mall.

Grafton's mall (Manchester (sp?) Mall) was the latest in existence, but also suffered from tenants leaving. It was barely limping along in the late 90's. Then K-Mart closed, which effectively killed the rest of the mall. A Kohl's food store also closed (and was torn down), but it had no direct connection to the mall, except thru Kohls Dept Store. Only a handful of stores were left, besides the only other anchor, Kohls. Now, as of April 5, Kohls has closed that location (and opened one off of I-43 & STH 60). It's only a matter of time before the rest of that mall is razed. Manchester's location did not really help itself, since it wasn't visable or really near a major highway. Unless you were from the area, you probably would have missed it.

A similar story could be said about Beaver Dam's old mall, which was killed completely when Wal*Mart relocated (although it was definitely dying before that).

However, Fond du Lac still has a fairly thriving mall (the Forest Mall). I know Sheboygan also has/had a mall, just off STH 23, anchored by Sears and a JCPenny? (now a Hobby Lobby). I haven't been back to Sheboygan in quite a few years, so that mall may be dead as well. As for why Hartford has no mall, my opinion is that it's too small of a town. Up until last year, the only major store was K-Mart. It does have a thriving downtown, thanks (I think) to the success of the Mineshaft restaurant.

The housing projects did not help the merchants, lots of roaming and hanging out maybe not doing anything bad, but intimidating shoppers.

what housing projects? i never seen housing projects by or near northridge(milwaukee areas), alot ofpeople came from various area of milwaukee, and speaking from my view different areas of the north side including me and i lived around the sq area of 43rd/ green tree rd to 43rd good hope to teutonia/good hope to teutoina and green tree.

I worked at northridge mall about 2 years before it closed, and let me tell you it was not a safe place to work or shop. In the evening hours there were at least 4 security officers and I also believe uniformed police officers on duty. Almost every night there would be some kind of incident involving young kids and young adults. Those were the only patrons that would be wandering around the place after 6pm. When we closed up for the night we would have to ring up the security office and have an officer escort us to the bank drop box and then to our cars. I witnesses 2 fights right outside our storefront, one incident was a stabbing of a teenager by another teenager. Those types of incidents were becoming typical. And, there WAS low income housing right behind the mall where I believe many of the young kids were coming from. Do I believe that's why the mall went downhill? No, probably not; but it didn't help. Most of those young kids were not really buying anything, just hanging out. It's sad because this was starting to happen at several other malls after northridge closed (mayfair), but I believe now that there is a curfew and if your under 18 you have to have an adult with you. It's to bad though that northridge had to close, I remember a time when it was a really nice place to go.

47th & Woodale is in the far SE quadrant of Brown Deer (south of Bradley, east of 51st). This was an isolated incident due to the criminal activity of the shooting victim, not some random home invasion, so it's not as if residents have any reason to be afraid to go outside after dark.

Brown Deer is still a really safe, really underrated community. I haven't seen cop cars in use for anything other than traffic violations in the year+ I've been here, and that's a great thing.

The person you're quoting apparently has no idea where the borders of Brown Deer are, so you can take his "quality of life issues" dig with a huge grain of salt. If they can't tell the brown street signs of Brown Deer apart from the green street signs in the Northridge area of Milwaukee, what else is this moron missing? He/She may "live in close", but his/her perception is not based in reality.

I am very happy to hear that Brown Deer is still safe. I mentioned in a thread last year that I have very fond childhood memories of Brown Deer and how safe and nice it was..this is back in the late 60s/early 70s.

I believe our house must have been close to where this shooting took place. We lived on a street called Goodrich Lane, the main retail intersection around there was Bradley Road and 43rd. I remember shopping at a supermarket called Red Owl that was on that intersection. I wonder what's there now?

I can understand a little bit where the poster might have been confused. If I remember correctly Northridge was on Brown Deer Road and 76th? Isn't that very close to Brown Deer?
