Hello all,

My small family and I will be moving from Neenah, WI to Waukesha in 4-6 months. We have 2 small children, 1 on the way, and our primary concern is cost of rent while I attend school full-time. Most 2-3 br apartments or residences are in the range of $800-1200 which is more expensive from what we're use to. (Are we able to get away with 2 br?) Are there any suggestions to nearby towns/cities that may have lower cost of rent? We both have good/great credit and excellent rental references, with no past evictions or bankruptcy. My significant other is a Registered Nurse and will be looking for employment in the vicinity as well. We both don't mind a 15-30 minute commute to school or work. We want to stay away from Milwaukee if possible and we don't expect a newly remodeled place to live or anything but we do desire a decent place for our little ones to grow up in.

Thank you for your help!

You should be able to get by 2BR for the next 6 month... With the newborn baby sleeping in your room anyways.

Thanks and yes, the newborn will be with us but I was wondering if we were able to get by with 2 br legally...or is it really dependent on the landlord?

It's up to the landlord to "enforce" it. Theoretically, a family of 5 is supposed to have 3br, but until the baby is born, you're still family of 4!

Some landlords don't want trouble and would care.

Washington Heights(A Milwaukee neighborhood) /Wauwatosa (A Milwaukee suburb) may be good options for you to look into. There are more family oriented living situations in these areas as there are many duplexes for rent and these areas are further west making your commute to Waukesha less daunting. West Allis may also be a good option, rent is quite cheap there and would be an okay commute to Waukesha depending on how far you are from the freeway.

Pewaukee is close enough and rents are much less than Milwaukee's better suburbs; Waukesha, west of Grand Ave is not that expensive either.
