this may be an odd request, but I film a lot of videos for youtube that have dialog in them that I narrate. I'm looking for a library or something like that were I can go inside a sound proof room and record my audio (I use my ipod to record) and talk, and shout without disturbing anyone. I can't do it at home because I live in an apartment. but does anyone know of any places that have sound proof rooms I can do this at? I live in west allis and I prefer to go to a free place.

You had me up until free. I was thinking a recording studio.

Some local universities might also have sound proof rooms for rehearsals.

do you think they'd let me use one if I requested, even though I'm not a student?

I don't really know. I don't know what would be in it for them.

Somewhat irrelevant. The OP needs to simply get on the phone. *Many* public libraries and university/college/local libraries offer access to services/collections/spaces to the public. Sometimes this could include an A/V space of some type, perhaps not a true 'soundproof' space, but certainly adequate enough for the OP's needs. [How do I know this is a possibility? I have worked to support academic libraries technologies and collections/service needs for over 25 years...]

cheers

You can do it in as little as a closet in your apartment if you have an extra one. Fasten egg cartons together in a string up and down and hang them from the top of the wall.

I too worked at (multiple) Universities and dealt with similar issues, however, we never gave access to random private citizens looking to use our facilities for personal gain. Community groups? Non profit orgs? Sure. But free access to a private citizens personally profiting (profit doesn't need to be financial either) from the activity? Never. I'd have been very surprised if your university did so.

well in a lot of my narrations on youtube, I shout and yell and scream. it was just that I didn't want to disturb anyone else really.

Contact the local high schools. Most have sound proof practice rooms for the band & orchestra students. If you contact the band or orchestra director directly I bet you can work something out. Some HSs even have actual recording studios.
