Any suggestions on decent areas to look for a house? Single guy, city dweller but dont mind living in a neighborhood outside of downtown. I saw a house in the Sunset Heights area. Any feedback on that area? Any suggestions on other neighborhoods ?

Thanks in advance!

Sunset Heights looks to be in the ghetto. If you stay in the city, stick with the east side, third ward or Bayview

Depending on the budget, and preferences in life. If you want to buy a cheap house and restore it to your liking, and aren't spooked by other peoples comments that such and such is ghetto and bad area - you can certainly find good deals in Milwaukee City (not necessarily in Sunset Heights). Outskirts of Milwaukee, and Milwaukee County are very good for suburban life, house can be bought cheap, etc.

If you prefer a city life, look for Shorewood, East Side, Brady St, Downtown, Walker's Point and vicinities, Bay View, Third Ward. I think you can find the cheapest rent in Shorewood, but i may be completely wrong. Glendale and Whitefish Bay are nice, safe, sort of in-between City and Suburban - might be a good choice. Wauwatosa, Greenfield, Franklin, Hales Corners, West Allis - are also nice choices (well, Stallis is less glamorous, but it's not too bad, some downtown, plenty of bars etc), reasonably priced - on the West Side.

Here's what you need to know about Milwaukee - and I don't know how it happens - but pretty much you can get from point A to point B in Milwaukee in about 30-40 minutes, no matter where point A and point B located in Greater Milwaukee Area, time of day, traffic, etc...

Budget? That kinda helps narrow things down a bit.

Triangular neighborhood bounded by Roosevelt, Burliegh and Fond Du Lac. Houses jammed in together all throughout, like every other hood in that area.

My wifes grandmother lives on 37th and Townsend. Not a great area. There are quite a bit of gunshots and cars race down Townsend and dont stop at the stop signs on every block. I guess, just depends what your willing to put up with.

Not a great area, yet she isn't robbed every day either. And not running from the area screaming. Maybe (hopefully) she personally feels reasonably safe and secure there and not been a victim of any crime in the last decade?

Sunset Heights is actually a really great little neighborhood, but it's surrounded by some pretty rough neighborhoods. 51st Blvd (between Burleigh and Roosevelt) is a wonderful street. The closer you are looking to that street, the better. This change drastically once you cross 35th St. Generally, the areas between 35th and 27th are pretty rough across the city (with the exception of Cold Spring Park, which is another wonderful pocket neighborhood.)

If you're looking for solid areas of stable property values and relative safety walking around at night, then you should probably stick to the East Side neighborhods mentioned above. If you're okay with a quieter, generally nice, but with occasional spillover crime, then areas like Sunset Heights and Cold Spring Park are great investment areas.
