Good afternoon!
I lived in Madison for 13 years, and I am looking to move back to WI. The weather here in the South is just too hot and humid for my taste. My husband's company has offices in Menomonee Falls, so we are considering various options. We spent a lot of time in Milwaukee when living in Madison and are somewhat familiar with the area. However, actually living there is another story. I am just doing some initial research, and Wauwatosa is very appealing with the central location. We would love to be near Whole Foods, a great Catholic church (preferably traditional), UW Milwaukee, Mount Mary College, and farmer's markets. We would love to be in a walkable community with a lot of families. Recently some houses in Enderis Park have popped up on my radar, too. Are these areas safe and family friendly? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

It can be brutal depending on where you live, it's 99 degrees outside right now where I live in the South. I really miss Wisconsin, but I just cannot deal with their Winters - 27 years of WI Winters were enough for me. You may want to try a state at the half way point, or maybe upper Missouri or along those lines. It depends on your tolerance for snow and cold because I've heard this past Winter in Wisconsin was absolutely brutal.

I hear you, but I actually miss that snow and cold weather. I love the extreme changes in the weather! I moved to NC from St. Louis 2 years ago. There was some winter, but not enough for me. Prior to that was Detroit for a year, which had similar weather to WI. The only choices for my husband's job is here in NC or the Milwaukee area. So, it's either swelter or freeze. Frankly, I prefer the latter. I may regret that later.....

Sub-zero can be rough, but some of us aren't any more likely to want to be outside in 99+ either.
I'm from the south and stayed indoors 6 months out of the year due to the heat. Heat has the additional downside of making me agitated. While I may not always just love the cold for weeks on end, at least it doesn't contribute to anger or frustration.
I don't know about where you live, but the level of grumpiness among the general population increases as temperatures go up. Cold, not so much. Maybe melancholy, but not hot under the collar usually.

I've lived in Western NC for four years and loved it, events that happened eventually brought me to where I am now. NC is a beautiful place, but I fully understand your needs!

Arkansas, lol...

It took me a year or two to grow accustom to Arkansas heat, it's definitely a different type of heat than NC or Wisconsin. I love the short Winters and love the heat, but working in the heat gets pretty dull after awhile.

WI is not that bad for winters or summer. Everybody only remembers the very coldest days or the very warmest days which in the grand scheme of things is small. Most places near Menomonee Falls are good areas. There are many things to do all year round in that area and Milwaukee. Winter is only really bad in Jan or Feb and not every day and summers mostly in July and August. This summer was actually very nice as we had 70s in much of August and is fine right now not too hot and not too cool. Good luck on your search.

Heat makes me very irritable after awhile, I much prefer colder temperatures.

Wauwatosa would be perfect. The area around the Village and close to North Ave are the most walkable in Tosa. If you want to be close to UWM and in a highly walkable area check out Shorewood. I don't know anything about the Enderis Park area.

I'm with you, I'd much rather have a cold snowy winter than the heat of the south. It's really not as bad as people like to think.

In Winter, where I live, everybody hates the cold and complains about it. When it's Summer, people complain that it's too hot. When it's Spring or Fall, people complain that it rains too much. LOL.

Milwaukee is a bit underrated, and quite affordable. And since it's on the western side of Lake Michigan ( great views), it's a little less "snow-bound", when compared to cities on the east side of the Great Lakes ( think Buffalo). Too much was made of the polar vortex which struck many northern states last winter--quite rare, and not long-lasting. Milwaukee would be fine..
