As transplants from another state who lived in the south suburbs not long ago, our experience was quite good. We weren't the only outsiders by any stretch and much of it was white-collar.
I prefer socio-economic diversity as opposed to everybody being on the same level though, and places like Oak Creek or even South Milwaukee and Cudahy offer that.

Franklin, Muskego, New Berlin, etc., seems almost identical to any other outer suburb with prices to match.
I'm not saying one area is better than the other, just that the differences still seem trivial to me.
Brookfield stands out as some sort of retail powerhouse. It reminds me most of what I'm used to seeing in affluent suburbs in other parts of the country.
I don't blame people for avoiding the absurdity of Milwaukee county property taxes.
In the Milwaukee metro, it seems to be easier to point out school districts to avoid than to obsess over who is a little above the rest. Mequon is perfectly fine, not knocking it at all.
Personally, I prefer places like Port Washington, Whitefish Bay, Wauwatosa, Greendale ('original' part), St. Francis, Cederburg, etc., for a little more walkability and overall feel that I like. To each their own.
