Where is safe? Would it be the sleepy town of Crandon where a 20 year-old kills six other kids and then himself? No suburbs or other cities are safe from random and senseless violence.

Crime has existed in Milwaukee for as long as the city has been around. You can randomly pick up a paper from over a hundred years ago and find plenty of local horror stories.

Let's not forget the fact that media plays a bigger part now - newspapers, tv, internet. In the 70's the city bus drivers were going to walk off the job because the violence was so bad. I think because images are now available ( and shown over and over again) the attacks seem worse, but I believe they have not gone up in the past few years....

there tends to be a lot of hype in the media. sure, violence can happen anywhere even in small towns. I also find that violence in the bigger cities is blown up. But if it happens to you then it doesn't sound like hype at all. But people get the impression by reading a newspaper or listening to tv that if walk downtown their going to get shot. I drive down North Ave. to the lake all the time and even broke down once right in a bad section. Nothing happened but it was daylight. I don't know about night though--it could have been different.

I used to believe this too, but the "random senseless violence" has become a little to "constant" for me. Infact it is what forced me to look around and make sure that I wasn't being decived regarding violence everywhere else! What I have found out is that when you have a area with a lot of people with a lot of energy and no place productive for them to express it, you end up with alot of this "random senseless" violence! What I've found out is that there are other places to be that offer more in the way of productivity specifically for the rambunctious. When people can see other alternatives they begin to think differently which will at least return any area to a time when violence was in fact RANDOM and senseless!
