I've got two little girls in a condo in a dense North Side Chicago lakefront neighborhood, and the biggest challenges for us are storage and lack of private outdoor play space. We do park our car indoors, but unfortunately it's indoors in a nearby building--not our building. Personally, I'd prefer to be in a small house with a small backyard that is still in a walkable neighborhood. And we would really like another bedroom/office. But it's definitely doable in a condo. You just need to live with less "stuff".

I didn't read through all the posts so I'm sure I'm just repeating what others have said, but I would think downtown is a good environment for kids. Sure, there's no backyard, but you're right, there's always the park, and the building you'll be in may offer some fun stuff for kids as well. If you have a balcony I'd be kind of wary about letting them out there, but again, supervision is key in any situation. I don't even live in Milwaukee yet and I'm already dreading living in a single family home. We'll be renting an apartment for awhile and then when we buy, we'll have our German Shepherd so we don't can't exactly live in a condo until he dies in probably 5 years or so. But I am loving the thought of buying a condo down the road so I don't have to deal with lawn care or snow removal. We used to own a lawn maintenance company so that's saying something, LOL. So I understand where you're coming from on that. Point that out to your wife...after all, it's YOU who would be taking care of those things in a regular house, right?

I have always lived in smaller homes since I have always lived in the city for the most part of my life. So to me 1,500sq ft is plenty for me not saying the extra 2,000 sq ft wouldn't be nice in the burbs but I don't need a lot of space. However when the little Milwaukee Cities come along I might want more room.
