I lost my job a number of months ago. Since then, I have been searching for jobs only through job boards (CareerBuilder, Monster...). Unable to locate a job, I attended a career workshop where they suggested networking to find a job. The speakers mentioned networking is one of the best ways to find a job. All of this sounded great, but I wasn't really sure where to start or who to talk to.

Could anyone suggest upcoming events to attend to network with other professionals in the Milwaukee area? Also, what are good websites to visit with networking events in Milwaukee. How can I meet potential future employers at events in Milwaukee. I have not used networking to find a job in the past, so an event geared toward learning about networking may not be a bad idea to attend either.

I appreciate your advice.

networking doesnt really happen like that. typically when you "network" its using friends, or former co-workers that will vouch for you. some random person wont say they'd hire you and thats what really lands you the job. more about past experiences, not just meeting a bunch of ppl

I agree with the other poster regarding networking in general - family and friends are probably your best bet. Just let them know you're looking for employment and ask if they could keep you in mind if they hear of any openings where they work.

As for websites, try Milwaukee Career Network at http://www.milwaukeecareernetwork.com. It's a free networking site that matches people with jobs. Haven't joined it myself, but they have events posted on their website. You could also try Meetup at Do something, Learn something, Share something, Change something - Meetup.com which could lead you to other area networking groups.

Good luck to you!
