I'm trying to find old Milwaukee addresses between 1900 and 1930.
For genealogy purposes have these addresses changed over the years?

year 1900 624 Washington
216 24th St
628 Frederick
607 Maryland
year 1920 1267 Prospect Place

year 1930 1074 Hackett

If they have changed would anybody know what the current addresses might be?

Any help would be appreciated

The north side addresses probably haven't changed since then, but at one point there was a shakeup of addresses on the south side as the numbered streets didn't quite match up with the north side ones.

That would probably only apply to the 24th street address, if it's on the south side. Then, the Washington is probably the same, but there may have been a duplicate Washington. The others are on the east side and probably are the same.

If possible, go to the Zeidler Room at the Downtown Milwaukee Public Library. They have City directories going back to the late 19th Century. I researched my house (built in 1925) to find out who the original owner was and who owned it through the years. I also did some research to find out where my grandfather and his family lived as kids in various duplexes throughout the North Side of Milwaukee. With these City directories, you can find out a lot of fascinating information relatively easily.

These City directories were unlike modern phone books in the sense that they had listings organized by address as well as family or business name. So you can trace along a street address by address to see who lived or did business at each address along the street.

In the mid-1920s, the City embarked on a major overhaul of its street numbering and naming system. Streets with two or more names along their length were given one name. Duplicate street names were dealt with. And the numbering of addresses was formalized.

What you can do is take a City directory from, say, 1920, before the street names and addresses were changed, and compare it with one from the after the change. So if a "Robert Johnson, Cobbler," is listed at 640 Washington in 1920, and is listed at 2430 N Washington in 1928, then you know what the modern address is of 640 Washington.

If you're not in Milwaukee, you can call the Zeilder collection at MPL. They've got a staff of librarians that should be able to help you out.

Assuming you haven't found the answer yet, there is a book that Wright's put out in 1930 that gave conversions of all the addresses in the city. The library should have a copy. All addresses in the city changed - N-S street addresses were greatly changed and E-W street addresses changed a little. Here is what I found:

624 Washington=1228
216 24th St=820
628 Frederick=2732
607 Maryland=2647

I couldn't find Prospect Pl and the Hackett address appeared to have been in Shorewood which wasn't listed in the conversion book I had access to.

I'm having the same issue with some south side and West Allis addresses. Is there anyway to figure it out on my own (a system of counting or something) or do I need access to the conversion book? I'm looking for the info for genealogy/research purposes.

Thanks!
