I am driving to Milwaukee from Cleveland tomorrow morning and would like to avoid Chicago traffic. Would driving to Lemont, IL and then going up 355N be the best way to do this? It looks like it still brings me close to the Chicago suburbs, will I end up in the traffic anyway?

I would take the 294 bypass, I have never had problems after 9am in Chicago. I would also go right through the tolls and just pay them online in the "missed tolls" section of Unpaid Toll (http://www.illinoistollway.com/portal/page?_pageid=133,2008701&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTA L - broken link)

I advise this to all people who don't own an Ipass, there is no penalty for paying a missed tolls so take advantage of it. Plus you can blow through the open road tolling at 80mph if you want.

If it is past 9am I would drive through downtown Chicago, it's a pretty cool sight to see! then again traffic doesn't bother me, even Chicago traffic.

I drive the Milwaukee-Cleveland route quite regularly, and pretty much always go through downtown Chicago and take the Skyway. I've found that if the traffic is bad along the downtown Chicago route, it's usually also pretty bad on the Bypass, so I just try to time things so that my drive through downtown misses rush hour.

I'm not a fan of paying tolls, and I prefer a pleasant drive, so always take Hwy 41 (Old Skokie Hwy) between the Ill/Wis border and Skokie. Much calmer than the Tri-State or whatever it's called now.

As cool as the Chicago skyline is, I respectfully disagree with the previous two responses. Unless you have a reason to stop in the city of Chicago, I'd avoid driving through it at all costs. The traffic in the city limits is UNPREDICTABLE, and you can easily get caught up in a horrible Chicago traffic jam. On top of that, 294, and the 94 toll road flow like a dream now that the construction is over. They have like 4-5 smooth flowing, construction free lanes on the 294 / 94 toll road now, so I'd totally take advantage of that. It moves so much more quickly than it did during the recent construction years.
