Hi..
My husband just got a promotion and my family will be moving to Minneapolis in the fall. (from Southern California, yet....truthfully, your winter daunts me..yet..intrigues me)
He will be working out of the international airport there.
We are looking to rent or buy a house or townhome there.
I am wanting to avoid known 'bad areas' but want to live not too, too far from the airport.
Any places specifically to avoid?
Thanks much for any help provided.

What type of area do you like, urban, suburban, rural?

How much are you willing to spend? Do you want a garden and/or garage? Newer or older neighbourhood? Will you need access to schools?

I think it would be easier to give you suggestions on what you do want, not what you don't, especially since your target geographic area is relatively small. In addition to the questions asked, what's your upper limit for commute?

Within fairly close distance to the airport you'll have a broad variety of options, from new to historic, suburban to city, etc. The only main concern in those areas would be potential airport noise, but that can vary quite a bit even within very short areas.

How about Highland Park near Ford Village in St. Paul. Very "cute", safe and close to the airport with easy accessibility.

How is Highland Park near the airport? It's not far, but not really close by, either.

The east side of Bloomington is pretty sketchy - I would avoid that area. If you want to be really close to the airport, then I would suggest living in Eagan. Burnsville and Savage aren't far away either.

Highland is less than 5 miles from the airport.

Um...Highland is probably closer to the airport than Savage. And I've never heard anywhere in Bloomington described as "sketchy..."

Highland is a great option, but it all depends on what you like, your budget, etc. Eagan would be a convenient more suburban location. And, of course, Bloomington itself has a lot of different options.

Another possibility (depending on what you're looking for) would be somewhere in south Minneapolis; the area around Lake Nokomis is nice. Some areas have airport noise, but it's not an absolute given. If you lived along the light rail line you'd have the potential for an easy commute; I've met several airport/airline employees who have chosen to live along there because it's so convenient.

Richfield is another inner ring suburb that's pretty close and has some relatively affordable townhomes and single family houses.
