Stonebrooke isn't very good in my opinion. The hole where you have to take the boat across the water is kind of cheesy and is something that should be left for mini golf.

I do agree with you though that it is kind of easy (especially with the wider fairways and open spaces), but there is nothing worse than picking an extremely tough course for a casual golfer. I played Harbourtown on my honeymoon and wow I was on the beach more than the seagulls. Has anybody played Clifton Hollow in River Falls? I am playing here next week and I was just wondering what it is like.
DS's golf coach plays there and says it is really nice. We haven't been there though.

For me, we are not casual golfers, we golf, a lot. I like a long course that makes you hit a ball straight with tricky greens and a little target golf mixed in . More often then not I play from the men's tees so I can hit my driver more often.

My sectional tournament to go to state was there my senior year of HS, but that was over 7 years ago now and it was the only time I played the course. Stretches of it are hilly, and other spots you have to be fairly accurate off the tee. I thought it was a decently challenging course, but am having a hard time remembering specifics.

A friend of my dad plays it all the time and he actually wrote me a hole by hole guide on how to play it, which may still be in my golf bag. I can take a look and if I have it I'll send it your way.

A golf trip I would recommend for anyone who wants to get away for a weekend and play some golf is Hayward, Wisconsin, about 2.5 hours from the Twin Cities. Hayward is a very nice little resort town and is regarded as the golf capital of Wisconsin with 13 courses in the area. We used to play a weekend tournament up there when I was in high school, and both courses we played were challenging and enjoyable. Telemark Golf Club was a real challenge, because it's basically carved into the woods and you have to be very accurate off the tee.

Another golf trip worth the drive is Turtleback Golf Club in Rice Lake, Wisconsin about 2 hours from the Twin Cities. The rate was reasonable the last time I played it (thinking 36 bucks a person with no cart for 18 holes). The course is very well designed and maintained, and the greens are quite fast and challenging (the name of the course comes from the shape of the greens).

Haven't had as much time to explore local Twin Cities courses, but I do make at least one of those above trips per year with some old friends.

Thanks IA Energy for the tips and I am trying to get better at golf and we all know the only way to do this is play more often and play the tougher courses. Golf Gal you sound like a much more advanced golfer than me, and the funny thing about my game is I am very good with my short game and I can drive the ball off the tee fairly far and straight, but my fairway wood and iron play is terrible. I just keep telling myself if I could only get it on the green I will be ok.

It's nice when it all comes together, that is for sure. One thing most beginning golfer do, especially with irons, is take too big of a backswing and too wide of a stance. It's hard to give "lessons" over the internet but if you shorten your backswing and don't swing so hard chances are you will make better contact and hit your irons better.
