I’ve never been to Minnesota before, and I’ll be in the Twin Cities this weekend for a wedding on Saturday. I’m flying in on Friday morning and will have Friday afternoon and evening free. I like to explore new cities on foot, so if the weather’s good I want to spend the afternoon walking around and seeing some different neighborhoods. Can anyone recommend a good itinerary? (I have a rental car, so I can drive from place to place to cover more ground in between walks.) I’m less interested in touristy stuff than in residential neighborhoods with classic architecture, alternative/arts districts, etc. Thanks!

Try the Minneapolis downtown riverfront area; Stone Arch Bridge/Guthrie Theater/Mill City Museum/Hennepin & Nicollet Ave/Loring Park/Walker Art Center. That's just one of several options...

I agree; definitely check out the Stone Arch Bridge and the neighborhoods on both sides of it. Next I'd suggest heading over to Uptown, and take a walk around Lake of the Isles (lots of beautiful houses, many with architectural distinction, and just a very pleasant walk to begin with; walk under the bridge connecting Isles with Lake Calhoun and have a snack or lunch at the Tin Fish restaurant right on Lake Calhoun, too). Another option is to head to Whittier, and the neighborhood around the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; lots of grand old mansions over there, and the stretch of Nicollet Avenue starting at around 24th Street or so and heading south is now called "Eat Street" because of its many restaurants and markets, many of them ethnic (but not just one ethnicity); the neighborhood is an interesting blend of hipster and immigrant, all set in one of the city's more historic neighborhoods.
