I'm looking at downsizing a lot of my cd collection...I just have too many and have come to the realization that I never listen to several hundred of them. I'd like to go to a used store to sell them all in one fell swoop.

Does anyone have a recommendation of which stores (and which locations) pay the most for cds? Like most people, I think more money in my pocket is good! I'd definitely like to stay local instead of going to an internet site like secondspin or half or ebay, mostly because I'd like to keep it simple.

I don't think any place pays well anymore. I just sold 20 or so at Cheapo in uptown and I believe they gave me $13.

Paying well is relative. I have probably 500-700 to unload and I'm more looking for reclaimed space in my home than paying off my mortgage. I'm hoping for .50-1.00 each on average, but obviously 1.00 is a lot better in volume than .50 or .10.

You might be better off donating them to a school, library or someplace like that and taking the tax write off.

golfgal: That's an intruiging thought. I just crunched the numbers though and I think that the amount that I could claim on it wouldn't be enough to justify it. I pay very little interest on my mortgage and because my itemized deductions are so low, even with a huge bump from a CD donation writeoff, it wouldn't be enough for it to make sense to itemize rather than take the standard.

Too bad, because if that had worked out I would do it in a heartbeat! But as it is, I think it'll make more sense to sell them.

There is an interesting service that will give you a free, new mp3 player in exchange for your cd's. I heard about this on the Stribs Audio column witten by Don Lindich (sp?) and he was extremely happy with the results. A little research may identify the particular company he used but a brief search turned up this one....

iPods/iPads/iPhones Exchanged for CDs and DVDs

The particular model of mp3 player is based on how many cd's you send (think they pay postage). It appears that they will send you a 64MB IPod Touch (loaded with your music), in exchange for 549 CDs.
