Thanks for all the help! We are going to look into a good single stage after listening to your advice.

If you live in minnesota and have a regular size driveway, if you don't get a two stage, you're asking for it. This is minnesota and none of those pansy snowthrowers will do. I have a Toro and I love using it to throw snow on my neighbors driveway... 20 feet away. If you go into a store that services what they sell, then chances are that they will match a big box store price and you'll be happier.

Depends on where you are - we are in the S Metro area. Being from FL - we were CLUELESS. We went to Jerry's Best - they gassed it up - gave us a tutorial - made us practice and sent us on our way. Ours was about $300-400. Works like a charm - exactly what we needed.

My opinions on snowblowers went through significant revision after that huge Dec 10 storm. I'm now all for big, honkin' 2-stage machines. Except that every storm since has dropped only a couple inches at a time, easily handled by shovel.

I talked to a couple folks that seemed to be in the know, and they agreed that, with snow blowers, you get what you pay for. If you're willing to plunk down a significant chunk of change (think $1000 territory) you're going to get a powerful, well-built machine that'll work (and hold itself together) for the rest of your life. If you try to go cheap, you'll be fighting that POS from now until the day you set it at the curb with a "take me!" sign on it.
