Thanks everyone for the advice. I have a few new places to try out. I have also tried Acapulco's and did not care for it.

El Loro is my FAVORITE! Also called El Toro, El Azteca and Rey Azteca (depending on location...same menu at all locations). Yummy food, fast service, cheap. Locations in Crystal, Coon Rapids, Savage, Andover, Chanhassen...

IMHO, good food, but not as authentic.

Sometimes I wonder what people mean by "authentic." Mexico is a big country, and various regions produce very different cuisines, with very different results. Why would one Empanada be more "authentic" than another made according to the same recipe?

I can't recommend any Mexican restaurant to you because I don't know what you are after. There are dozens of Mexican restaurants in the Twin Cities owned and operated by Mexican immigrants. They are as authentic as any other Mexican restaurant in North America. If you can't find one that you like then maybe you should ask yourself why you like what you do.

Sorry, that sounds snarky, but I don't mean it that way... I'm just saying that you need to figure out why so many restaurants don't appeal to you. If the menu is not to your taste, then order off the menu. Ask the chef to prepare something that you want. Any decent restaurant in town would do that.

By authentic I mean the type of Mexican food I was able to get while living in Chicago, Denver & San Diego. They were all similar.

And what was similar about them? Spice? Ingredient ratios? Freshness? Recipes?

Astron1000, I get your point, and agree to a point -- there are certainly plenty of authentic Mexican places in the Twin Cities. On the other hand, I also completely understand Dusty8940's request, too; there's a lot of Tex-Mex places around, and Mexican places that offer fairly Americanized food. And places like Pepitos can be fun in their way but aren't exactly what I think of when I hear "authentic Mexican", yet are often recommended as such.

I found this blog that offers some reviews of Lake Street Mexican restaurants; maybe it will offer some inspiration. minneapolis mexican food - lake street

I just discovered a place that offers a number of vegetarian tamales (La Loma), which makes me very happy! I haven't tried them yet, but plan on making a trip to their Global Market location soon. I see they have a downtown location, too; has anyone tried either option and have any feedback? The reviews I've seen so far have been pretty good, so it may be worth checking out.

Authentic, you say? Try Mercado Central, 1515 E Lake St Mpls. There are a half dozen food booths there, all different, all run by and patronized by Mexican immigrants.

To clarify, the OP specified "authentic", thus my comment. Personally, I like both authentic and not-so authentic. When I want authentic, I'll go to Burrito Mercado. But I also like Pepito's and Boca Chica, both of which are "Americanized" Mexican. Same with Chipotle. I draw the line at Taco Bell, tho--just don't like it . I really like the burgers at the Blue Door, but I also like White Castle burgers. Two very different tastes. I also really like Punch Pizza, which is supposed to be authentic, but I also really like Red's Savoy and Fat Lorenzo's, neither of which are anything like Punch. Asian? I like Pho 79 (incredibly authentic), but I also really like Cafe Ngon, not authentic at all (and doesn't try to be). I even like LeeAnn Chin (but forget Panda Express!) I'm not a food snob, but I have no problem with someone demanding authenticity. I just like good food, well-prepared.
