I rode Empire builder to Chicago every other Sunday and back home to MSP every other Friday for the past two years. I had the choice to either drive, fly or take the train.

Driving to Chicago was a little expensive but I would do that in the summer rather than take the train because the costs more then.
Flying was sometimes about the same cost of the train but getting to O'hare meant tacking $35-40 fees on either end for cab fare (I was in Evanston). And then there's the whole airport experience, right? Forget that.

The train was great. I could leave my vehicle there all week and pick it up when I got back. It took a little longer but I didn't have to pay attention to the road. I could watch movies, read and surf the internet (my laptop tethers to my phone) or just snooze. I could even drink beers because at no point would I be driving! This was my first real rail experience and it was positive.

Back to topic, high speed would only make things better but it's a moot point for me since I'm back in the cities full time. I'd like to see it happen though. I believe Empire Builder's been running since the late '20s/early '30s with upgrades over the years.
