Houston is a big town - when they say it has a 40% chance of precipitation, that means it's currently raining on 40% of the city. You will need to check with somebody in Houston to find out where the decent schools are. They'll probably tell you they're in Minnesota.

Why does it matter? If you're relocating to Houston and are looking for good schools there you will need to try the Houston forum; they can help you to find either an overall good district or an area that has good neighborhood schools. Houston's huge; I'm sure that (like most cities) it highly varies by specific school. Looking at district overall, or state, doesn't help much when it comes to practical purposes like looking for a school for your own child. Texas has some very good schools. I'm sure you can find something that will work for you and your family. If you love your son's current school and are happy and secure here then I can see why you wouldn't want to relocate, but if the move is definite or good for other reasons I wouldn't let fear of finding a decent school stop you. Good luck with the move!

i have asked ppl in houston forum also and have searched nice neighbourhoods but still some say that Mn schooling ssytem is way better then houston..this is what causing a big confusion....

I didn't mean why does education matter, rather why look at the state versus state, as it sounded like you were looking for specific schools with your children in mind, as opposed to contrasting the states for larger policy questions. Understandably education matters a lot, as do schools -- it's just that for relocation purposes you've got to look at the specifics, not generalities. I don't know about Houston, for example, but overall I'd say Minnesota's schools are better than those in my previous state, California, but California also had some of the best schools in the country, as well as its worst.

In Houston I would concentrate on asking people if specific school districts have large district-wide issues (funding, for example), as well as which individual schools would meet your needs. Give them as much information as possible -- budget, job location, what kind of neighborhood and house you want, commute you're willing to accept, what kind of school you prefer (i.e. is there anything specific in a school you want or don't want). Every state and metro area, and often even individual school district, has its excellent schools, but also has poor schools. I'm sure you can find something decent in Houston; whether or not you can find something near your work that fits your budget is a different story, but I think Texas is generally cheaper than Minnesota, so maybe you can.

OP - I think the response was specific to education - Only you can determine the factors that are important to you - that will depend on your child and his/her needs - and only you can decide what is the best system - but generally speaking Minnesota schools are better than Texas.
