If you have the time to drive it's a two-day drive; we've done the Minneapolis-Delaware drive multiple times. It's worth investigating, as it's a lot cheaper than flying! (we're from here, so not currently returning "home" to visit; when we've lived elsewhere it's ranged from 0-3 times per year, averaging about once per year.)

Florida - We go back twice a year for a week each trip. The kids 4 times per year - spending a week or two in the summer or spring break with their friends. They also have a couple of friends come up over the summer.

What dates did you use? If you are pricing out trips for the summer, for example, ticket prices are going to be about as high as they get. Typically air tickets are the least expensive about 21 days before a flight. Check flights home for mid January and see if there is a price difference. I don't think we have paid more than $160/ticket for any flights we have taken in the past 5 or so years.

Im a ticket stalker. I usually track the tickets for a while to get a sense of prices and about 14 days out are the best prices. For example after Tgiving - a ticket on Delta direct was $333; 1 day later it went up to $420 and a few days later to $510 (the tix was for 12/23-1/3); it stayed at that price for about 7 days - then one morning (Weds - which is usually a good day) I got the exact flight for $218. Crazy huh.
note - Delta permits you to cancel tickets up to 24 hours after booking - so if you see a good price - book it - at worst if a better price pops in less than 24 hours - or you change your mind you cancel.

Default How often?

First five years after relocation-twice a year. Next five years-once a year. After that, I started paying for the most important people (like mother) to come visit me

I'm from Chicago and when I'm in Minnesota I visit Chicago every other holiday. Just save your money then go visit home.

I go to PA about twice a year. Usually once with the whole family and another time I go alone. My family is in Pittsburgh. Sometimes tickets to Cleveland are super-cheap and then a rental car gets me the rest of the way but usually I just watch for deals.
