Use to be called the Falls Hotel (can google it by that name still), pretty dingy place and probably has a rent-by-the-hour option

There is another place that appears to be in business called the "Hostel" near 38th St (Ave?) even closer to the LR/Falls for $40/nite.

I'd check out one of the Priceline/Hot Wire forums in which you can find leads to many of the better hotels East of the MOA for around $60/nite. Any of these would likely offer free shuttles to the MOA and are near the LR and the Minnesota Valley Nature Preserve near 34th Avenue.

If you want to see some "mad snow", I would definately stop at Minnehaha falls. It's right next to a light rail stop. I was there a couple weeks ago, and there was still some water running over the falls, I don't know if the falls has completely frozen over yet. The waterfall is impressive enough in summer, but a frozen waterfall is amazing.

You might run into some kids "relaxing" behind those frozen falls though. At least I did...

When I lived there back in the 70's/80's, it also seemed, to me, there was a motel or two along Hiawatha, but I have no idea if there's a rail stop within a walk of them. If so, it would serve those on tight budgets quite well, as the low-cost, older motels have pretty much been driven out of the downtown areas across the country, or converted to monthly rentals.

And I've stayed in some of those older motels catering now to monthly renters, and some of these motels still keep a few rooms designated for nightly rentals. Interesting places to stay, nonetheless. Don't mind spending the nite around the working poor.

The Holiday Inn Metrodome is located in the 7-corners district on the U of M campus and offers complimentary transportation to the Metrodome Light rail station. If you prefer to walk, you can also do that. Good luck with your choice.
