Good luck. New York is a fabulous place. I spent time there in my 20's and wouldn't have had it any other way.

Bon voyage! Wish I were going back there to live, too. Alas! In any event, we manage to visit NYC at least twice a year to renew old friendships and the old places. Wife and I were there together in the early 60s. We hit it just right when the folks music craze was in the upswing. Bob Dylan, Peter Paul & Mary, etal, would perform in Washington Square Park. Cassius Clay would do the town. Central Greenwich Village was full of folk song artists. There was a time! GV is pretty tame now. But we have friends who live in that area.

We'd love to walk from the Battery/South Ferry up from where Broadway starts to midtown. That's a nice healthy walk. Just go from 1 Broadway to the upper east side. Then go over to Central Park and sprawl on the grass.
