Pizzeria Uno is going to be as close as you get to Chicago style. I'd try it.

Now, it isn't going to rate up there with the authentic Chicago places, like Giordano's, Gino's, Numero Uno, or Edwardo's. Those places are in a class of their own. At least Uno was gracious enough to open one shop in the Twin Cities, so we can get our fix.

SlyFrog has a good point. Minneapolis doesn't have true Chicago Pizza. But then again, neither does Denver, Seattle, LA, Dallas, Phoenix, Indy, Detroit, NYC, Miami.... catch my drift? Chicago lucked out.

As for the best pizza in town, I would either say Gina Maria's (small chain) or Cosetta's. As far as national chains go, you can't beat Papajohns.

But having lived in Chicago for four years and Minneapolis for 8, I can tell you that I have yet to find a Minneapolis pizza that tastes and feels anything like a true Chicago style pizza.

Of course, now to contradict myself, I will note that while Green Mill wasn't terrible, the couple of times I've been there I did not really understand what Twin Cities natives found so special about it. I've had far better pizza in the area.

Probably the best Minneapolis pizza I've had is either from Red Savoy or Cosetta's (and that was, sadly, 7-8 years ago). But they were good in their own right, not because they approximated Chicago style (which they don't).
Actually, Red's Savoy and Cosetta's are St Paul pizzarias. Both of their pizzas are thin crust, both are very good, but neither is anything like a Chicago deep dish pizza.

Yeah, I know.

Which is why I said that very clearly in my post.

Interesting how tastes differ. I'm not a fan at all of Gina Maria's, but give me a nice thin-crust Carbone's or Green Mill pizza or maybe a couple of sausage super slices from Rocky Rococo and I'm in heaven. :-)

We had a delivery place called Cheetah Pizza in Eden Prairie that wasn't too bad for delivered pizza.

Are you one of those guys who can't/won't distinguish Mpls from St Paul?

I remember Carbones too, in West St.Paul. Very popular.

At Amores we had a darn good Chicago deep dish. Does anyone remember that place? It was on Yankee Doodle Rd.in Eagan.

Yes, because as someone who has only lived here for 8 years, the battlelines people draw trying to pretend that it is not really one big metropolitan area still seems stupid and silly.

St. Paul is included in the "Minneapolis area" as far as I'm concerned. Hell, Woodbury is included in the Minneapolis area as far as I'm concerned.

Minneapolis and St. Paul are two separate towns: just ask a native from either city to go across the river to the other one; and their stomachs knot up in fear about crossing the river to a *foreign* place!

I've lived and worked here for over 30 years and have always wondered how the river could be such an effective border in this metropolitan area.

Oh, and as far as pizza, I guess I never knew that there were specialty pizzas in Chicago when I've been there before. Maybe next time I go I'll check it out and see if it's so much better than anywhere else.
