Hello, my girlfriend and I will be relocating to Minneapolis this summer, any info would be appreciated. We are planning on living downtown as I will be going to grad school at the U of M and she has a job lined up in the area. Any high rises or relatively nice apartment buildings anyone can suggest? We have looked online but it is always nice to get a locals perspective on the situation. Rent could be anywhere between 900 and 1,100$. Thanks for the help!

I think you've got it right living downtown if your girlfriend will be working downtown and you'll be going to the U. If you find a place close enough to the light rail, you can take the train to the West Bank (the Carlson side) and depending on where you want to go, you can take the city bus or campus bus to the east bank. As far as which particular buildings to live in, to me it is just about area and amenities. There are many nice buildings downtown so take your time and look around. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

Congrats. I made the move from Madison to the Twin Cities in '98. You might want to consider Northeast Minneapolis too. Lots of bars and shopping and close to the U. Rental prices might be a bit less than "downtown".

Downtown would be a good fit, but I agree Northeast might be a little cheaper and the commute time would be simliar.

Another vote for Northeast. It's really cool -- like Uptown, but a bit more mature and laid back. As for apartments, here's a list:

$900-$1100 might not get you much in a downtown highrise (believe me, I've looked in that price range). Unless you can accept a studio for the two of you. There are highrises outside of downtown that are more affordable though, including Edina Towers where I currently live. Let me know if you want more info. The building is a 10 minute commute to downtown, the airport, AND the Mall of America.
