Although surburbs aren't for everyone, most Americans prefer living in a surburb in a nice subdivision and raising their family away from the city.

I am not into surburbs that are from the city such as Eden Prairie and Apple Valley.

I'm currently searching for a place to live in Eagan, which is just a bridge away from St. Paul.

I hope people in Eagan are friendly because my neighbors here are too stuck-up to speak to anybody. LOL

According to CNN's Best Places to Live 2010, five of top 100 best places to live are in MN and all are surburbs of Twin Cities.

1. Eden Prairie
11. Plymouth
13. Woodbury
15. Eagan
20. Apple Valley

Only CO, CT, MN, and NY have the most best places among 50 states.
I agree with other posters here. While I'll probably end back in the Twin Cities to settle down, I would never move to any of those subarbs that were ranked. Boring, middle class, white suburbian neighborhoods aren't what I'm looking for in a best place to live.

I have lived in two of the Cities suggested. Omaha feels a little too small to be compared with Minneapolis. Denver seems to remind me the most of Minneapolis.

People really think Omaha is like Minneapolis? Seems odd to me, but interesting.

I'm not so sure.....I think many Americans (not all, obviously) would LIKE to live in the city but the crime (or perception of crime), schools, grit, infrastructure, etc. turn many people away. One of the BIGGEST reasons we don't live in the city now (or in Cleveland if we move) is because the schools in the city are usually not nearly as good as the suburbs, and our childrens' education means the world to us. I'm more open to it as I grew up in the city and went to public city schools, but it's my wife who points out generalizations about inner city public schools and it's hard to break that mentality. I hope I can....but I REALLY hope that inner city schools turn it around and the city becomes a great place to raise a family.

From the hip I'd say Seattle and Denver (education, and recreation)

What are the rough parts of both Minneapolis and St. Paul that should be avoided?

I can't find any information on St. Paul.

Based on my readings from other threads, it was often mentioned that rough part is north of Olson Memorial Highway to Near North, Camden, and Northeast sections of Minneapolis. Is that correct? Aren't Fridley, New Brighton, and Brookyln Park/Center also rough since it's close to these neighborhoods?

Camden is a very nice, very safe part of Minneapolis; check out some of the crime statistics for some of those far north Minneapolis and you'll find absolutely NOTHING to suggest that they are "rough." Most of Northeast is also quiet and safe. So no, that's not correct. I just checked out Shingle Creek's community policing plan for 2011, for example, and their primary problem is traffic violations.

Even the "roughest" neighborhoods of Minneapolis don't need to be avoided.

People have the perception that east Saint Paul is rough. Though I've never spent significant time there, the times I have been there have never given me a negative impression.

You are correct about Near North, but not about Camden and Northeast. The majority of people in the Twin Cities hold this perception that North Minneapolis as a whole is some warzone ghetto, when really it's not and there are only a few neighborhoods that are rough, Near North and Jordan being the most significant. In a similar category would be Phillips, which is actually in South Minneapolis.

Some people would consider Brooklyn Park/Center to be rough, but they really aren't that bad. Fridley and New Brighton are definately not rough areas at all.

Boy, if you think there are any rough areas of the Twin Cities, I'd suggest you take a little trip to East St. Louis, Gary, Cleveland or Detroit.

Why do you think Minneapolis has more in common with Seattle than Denver?
Minneapolis and Seattle have well-developed cultural institutions. For example, their respective theater scenes are quite similar. Denver can’t compete in this area.
