Hello,

I am about to relocate to Minneapolis in a few months.
I am wondering which neighborhoods of twin cities see the highest activity in Java / J2ee development jobs ?
Also I have around 10 years experience in Java/J2ee dev., what kind of salary can I expect to get there ?

Thanks. Fab

Check with downtown headquarters buildings like Target/Macy's, Wells Fargo, etc. Most the tech industries are in the south & SW suburbs (Bloomington, Edina, Eden Prairie, Chanhassan). As for salary, it depends on how bad they want you. Good luck.

Thanks. Ok seems like SW is definitely where to live if working in IT... especially contracting (ie changing places often).

How is the IT market there ? Anybody would be able to provide a range of possible salaries for java/j2ee ?

Thomson/Rueters in Eagan has a lot of IT job openings. 3M is another place to look. There are quite a few companies in the south and eastern suburbs for IT as well. I would NOT commit to a place to live until you find a job. You certainly do not want to drive from Eden Prairie to Woodbury every day, for example.

I agree that you don't want to commit to a place to live BEFORE you find a job. My husband recently interviewed for some jobs headquartered in downtown Minneapolis, so it's not only SW. If you're planning on trying to be a consultant or taking on a series of contractor positions you're probably best off living, at least in the short-term, somewhere central.

Thanks again for your input.

Would you consider Edina as a good location for a IT contractor ? It seems like it would be half-way from SW and downtown minneapolis...

Edina's a perfectly good area. Control Data Corporation used to have a big factory there, and lots of former CDC people spun off their own IT companies in the neighborhood (Computer Ave).

Yes, I think Edina would be a very convenient location for an IT contractor.

What if you end up with a job in Maple Grove?

I'll agree with the don't commit to a place, even a central place, until you have a job. You don't want to live in Edina and end up in Maple Grove.
