To the OP: what do you want in a neighborhood? I was working with the assumption that you know what you're getting into with these locations. I think I'd be bored out of my mind living in that location, personally, although it's perfectly nice for what it is, and is, I think, a good example of how suburbs can adapt to changing times and needs and retrofit neighborhoods for modern times. It's not exciting or trendy or bustling or urban, but it's not trying to be. It's an older mall area of a traditionally upscale suburb that has a lot of older residents, but is simultaneously trying to reinvent itself to make itself desirable as a housing location for both the older empty-nesters who perhaps don't want to drive everywhere (but do want convenient access to things when they do drive), as well as younger professionals who are attracted to the same things. It's definitely an older crowd out that way (as in: much older), but there does seem to be some younger people moving in these days. There's a lot of people who work around there, so I assume it also is quite appealing for those who want to have very quick access to work (and with all the new sidewalks and trails, it's easier than ever for them to even have the choice of walking or biking, although it still has a ways to go before it can truly call itself pedestrian-friendly, despite the city's best efforts. It's getting there, though, and you do see a lot of people walking around.). It's definitely solidly suburban living, but done in a new, and I think better, way than in years past. And it does pretty much have everything you need for daily life all right there.

Since I love a good area study, here's the "Greater Southdale Area" planning document, chock-full of useful information and details about the area and its potential for the future:

I live in Lowertown St. Paul right now. I absolutely LOVE it! There are great bars (the apartments you are looking at are right across the street from them), a wonderful park and everyone is really friendly.

We have two dogs and walk around downtown all of the time. We see familiar faces and lots of new people that we talk to and become friends with. I doubt you would have that in Edina. The area is young and really picking up pace.

Plus, the commute to St. Thomas is a easy. Lowertown is just off of 94 and you could be at school in 15 minutes easy. It would take 20 to 25 minutes from Edina. (I used to go to St. Kate's from Bloomington so I can say this for sure.)

Edina is nice, but when I lived in north Bloomington (right across the border to Edina) it didn't seem to have the same fun, young vibe.

Thank you so much for this! I think we have decided on Lowertown! See you around!
