Brooklyn Park south of 610 can be sketchy. North of 610 should be fine and actually looks really nice (great parks/trails in that area too). I would guess that south of 610 along the river is okay, but I'm not sure (I feel comfortable biking there though).

Well, they are small towns so yes, they have a small town feel . Albany is a very cute town right off 94. Most of these towns are going to have a pretty active downtown for locals, places to shop, a cafe or two, probably a coffee house thrown in there. They are going to be places where everyone knows everyone.

Don't believe the hype. There's nowhere in BP that's 'sketchy'. It's an older inner-ring, diverse suburb of 80,000 people. I can't stand the ignorance regarding this town... unless you've actually ever lived there, then shut your mouth. I've lived there. My grandmother has lived there. I still know tons of people that live there and have really nice homes in really nice neighborhoods there.

I drive thru these neighborhoods and see nice, neat manicured lawns with nice mature trees and think "Why in the world do people call this town 'ghetto' and 'sketchy'"

I have an answer - and that's pure ignorance. People see people of color, a large city of 80,000 8 miles from DT Mpls, and think it's 'ghetto'.

It really depends on the neighborhood. Basically anywhere along the river is nice.

Perception is reality. That's the unfortunate truth.

Let's compare Brooklyn Park with some of it's neighbors:

Burglaries/Aggravated Assault/Auto theft per 1000 people in 2009:
Brooklyn Park: 7.95/2.05/2.51
Champlin: 2.96/0.68/0.34
Maple Grove: 2.74/0.35/0.33

Here's the Brooklyn Park crime map for the last week (you can change the dates to whatever you'd like though) if you care:

A better example would be comparing Brooklyn Park to St. Paul, Bloomington, Brooklyn Center and Minneapolis. Even Crystal, New Hope, Robbinsdale...

Comparing a post wwII gentrified inner ring suburb of 80,000 to two new squeaky clean sprawly mid-ring suburbs is like comparing apples and oranges.

I would expect a city of 80,000 people 8 miles from DT Mpls to have more crime than sleepy bedroom community of 60,000 16 miles frm DT Mpls

it's 'Ghetto' because some person from the boonies' perception of BP is that? I'm not buying it.

I grew up there, in the early 2000s we'd ride our bikes all over that city, as young young kids. Never ever had an issue. Don't let density and population numbers skew your perception of crime

I've seen horror movies showing the graphic actions of chainsaw maniac killers in carnivals. What truths should I draw from those perceptions? That all amusement parks are run by psychos?

The mass media traffic in fear; it sells product.
