If the 45 minutes is to the Eden Prairie office, and not to the U, then you should have no problems finding something more rural. I don't know those areas well enough to give you any useful advice, but if you continue your path towards the far, far edges of the metro area you can still find small towns and large lots and a more country feeling. Just be warned that some of those areas have experienced a lot of exurban growth, so what feels country today could easily house subdivisions tomorrow (although that generally has very much slowed down in recent years due to the economy). Along 169 out towards Le Seuer (a nice small town, home to the Jolly Green Giant) still feels rural, not suburban, for example; not sure where the rural/suburban line is these days, but you can probably come in closer than that and still find large lots and a more country, less suburban, feel. I don't think the real suburban sprawl starts up until you get closer to Chaska, but could be wrong.

Default Real Estate taxes

Are real estate taxes in MN overall crazy high?? The homes we are finding have roughly at least double the taxes that we do here....wondering if that is a state thing or if it changes by county up there?

Real estate taxes can differ by neighborhoods around here. MN is one of the most heavily taxed states in the Nation, but for that you get the top schools in the nation, excellent social service programs, great infrastructure, etc. especially compared to Missouri. In other words, you get what you pay for. Also assuming you are comparing apples to apples and comparing similar sized and priced houses.

We did it, and there were 5 of us. It's a good suggestion to rent first and/or rent while you are looking for a home.

These properties are within 30 miles of Eden Prairie, have 4+ bedrooms, 6+ acres and are priced less than $375k.

- 6352 Meridian Ave S, Montrose
- 3380 Antelope Ave SW, Montrose
- 2195 Cameron Ave SE, Rockford Township - my favorite
- 21071 County Road 9, Winsted Township
- 8420 Ox Yoke Circle, Minnetrista
- 9220 Hackney Drive, Waconia Twp
-17325 48th Street, Hollywood Twp

Some of those have a hobby farm feel so not sure what you think about lots of out buildings.

Keep in mind that a commute that takes you 45 minutes west of Eden Prairie will go to an hour and a half in heavy snow. You might also want to stay north of the Minnesota River since some of the bridges close during the spring flooding and the others get pretty crowded. I'd follow BillWallace's lead here and work from the listings. You have a pretty specific list so you are only going to have x number of choices.

Just noticed that BillWallace is a real estate agent. I've always used a buyer's agent so give that some thought.

Default Early 2013 move

Looking like we are in for an early 2013 move up to the Minneapolis area finally! Any tips, advise or otherwise as far as areas/towns to steer away from?
For those that remember....eden prairie will be the daily commute from wherever we end up. Not afraid of a drive! Will be looking for that small town feel but still with opportunities for the kids.
Any websites out there that you might suggest to start getting a feel for what's where?
Trying to get a feel for real estate but finding realtor.com to be a little lacking in the way of useful information on most of the homes we think look intriguing. Not quite ready to hook up with a realtor just yet...more like trying to see what sort of homes are where and prices.

Any help .... so very appreciated

If you want small town feel with a commute to Eden Prairie I would suggest Chaska, Waconia, Belle Plaine, Jordan even as far as New Prague if you don't mind the drive (and the drive won't be all that bad). All will be reasonable commutes, all smaller towns to small towns.
