My wife and I will have our 1 year anniversary next weekend and we are looking for things that we could do in the city. We are willing to spend money and would like to have an amazing time no matter what we do. We enjoy all types of activities ranging from outdoor to indoor things such as theater productions. I am looking for suggestions on a few different things:

1) A nice hotel or a good location to stay in to feel like we are on a first class trip. I know Minneapolis has nice hotels - but I think we both kind of prefer downtown St. Paul since it is more laid back.

2) A nice restaurant to try out for dinner that really represents the Twin Cities area.

3) Things to do in the area - outdoor endeavors, events that are going on for Sunday 6/12, day events, and night events.

I have lived in this area my whole life but don't really know the ins and outs of the city and I don't have a good guide as to finding things to do. Thanks for the help on the topic!

I heard The Melting Pot is a great place to go for a special occasion. I have never personally been there, but I have heard many great things!

The St. Paul Hotel in St. Paul would fit the bill. You could eat there or wander over to Forepaugh's.

Another option would be to go to the Lowell Inn in Stillwater, eat there, stay there, then spend the day/evening wandering around Stillwater.

A few ideas:

1. Stay at The St Paul Hotel, look into events at the Ordway or Fitzgerald Theater. Have dinner at Mancini's (classic old time steakhouse w great drinks). There's also The Heartland Cafe in Lowertown.

2. Stay at The Nicollet Island Inn, look into events at The Guthrie, walk along the riverfront/stone arch bridge/St Anthony Falls, Have drinks at Nye's and dinner at the Red Stag or one of the places on East Hennepin (or over to Bar LaGrassa). Rent bikes on the Nice Ride and bike around the riverfront. I know you didn't mention Minneapolis, but I figured this would be a more laid back part of Mpls

3. Stay in Stillwater or Red Wing--they also have nice settings for weekend getaways.

Some friends of mine went there for their anniversary (dating, not marriage, but same difference) and loved it. However, I know they did have to book a bit in advance. Apparently they fill up rather quickly?

I've been to the Melting Pot. It is unique but not really all that romantic of a place to eat. I think you can find better options for a 1st Anniversary dinner, but we like Melting Pot for a different place to eat.

I'd go for something more unique. Melting Pot is a neat idea but it's just a more upscale chain. How about Piccolo in Southwest Minneapolis, with a concert at Lake Harriet a short walk away? It's not downtown, but the newish Westin in Edina is really very nice. Yes, it's stuck amongst a bunch of shopping, but there are some nice places in the Galleria to enjoy breakfast in the morning and go for a walk at Centennial Lakes. (Obviously, I'm a Minneapolis person!).

I was majorly disappointed in the Lowell Inn. I didn't eat there so I can't comment on that but the room was a dud. The beds were all so fluffy it was hard to move around in them. The whirlpool was nice but it was in the same room as the toilet at all which, to me, was just gross. I guess other rooms do have the separation. I don't think they served even a basic breakfast to their guests although I'm not certain. I'll never stay there again.

Stillwater was nice for an anniversary though. We ate at a nice riverside restaurant on the patio, can't recall the name, and bought some yummy chocolates. They have some bed and breakfasts that are supposed to be good.
