Every other state I have lived in requires you to at least take a written test to get a license in their state. It isn't unique to MN.

When I moved from NJ to CO then back to NJ, then to PA, now GA, I never been asked to re-do the written test. Just Eye test.

When I moved to PA i did take a test, but after i completed it, They hand'ed me my Licence, and told the test I took was more of a survey, PA was making a "moving to PA driver handout booklet" of thing people from out of state get wrong on the 'test' survey.

Same here. We've lived in five states, and while I've only had the permit, my husband has had to take the written test every time -- I assume it's because each state has some slightly different rules. If it goes too long you could get stuck taking the driving part, too, but I don't know how long a grace period you get. I would not drive with the expired license. It's a lousy situation all-around. Thank our state government's inability to compromise for that.

You're right. I don't think it was in all of the states, although there was an eye test requirement in all, I believe (including VA and DE), and you had to physically show someone proof of ID (that may have been what I was thinking of as far as "test", although I know a few places required a quick computer 20-question written test). In any case, it's not unusual for states to require a written test, and given that they're very easy and very short, it's not a big deal. Unless, of course, the government is shut down, but that would -- I assume -- also mean no one available to do the eye test portion or check IDs, either.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'll just wait (and possibly go home end of July if necessary). It's still 3 weeks so hopefully the gov't figures out what they are doing by then.

FL gave me a replacement license with no test when I previously moved there too.

My auto insurance policy has a clause that says that there is no coverage if the driver doesn't have a valid driver's license.

As far as a potential ticket - though this is purely my own opinion it seems if you were stopped, explained the situation, showed paperwork to the effect, and the officer still ticketed you there would be a potential argument before a judge

As far as insurance - it wouldn't surprise me if that were the case, at least on the point of liability. Guess you might have some bedtime reading material...
